Travel insurance may not be the first thing you think about when you are planning an exciting holiday, but it’s something that should certainly be researched and purchased as you never know when you might need to make an insurance claim.

There are quite a few different types of travel insurance available, ranging from cheap travel insurance deals through to more tailored packages that you can choose according to your needs and travel habits.

Single trip cover: as the name suggests, this offers you travel insurance for one trip only. When you take out the insurance, you’ll have to specify your departure and return dates and you’ll be covered for that period.

Annual insurance: if you travel more regularly, you might benefit from multi-trip annual travel insurance. This generally covers as many trips as you need to take over the course of a year, as long as each trip lasts for 90 days or less. You can often get insurance extras, such as cover for sports, as part of this insurance.

Over 65s insurance: this is another type of insurance that is exactly what it sounds like – insurance for people over the age of 65.

Winter sports cover: many winter sports come with a risk factor, which means that they often require extra insurance. This is why the specialist winter sports cover was developed.

What it covers

Exactly what your travel insurance covers will depend on which type of insurance you take out. However, the basics that are included on the vast majority of policies include health cover, so if you are ill or injured while away, you’ll be able to pay for any treatment you need. The only exception is if you have a pre-existing condition as it isn’t always possible to get insurance for these.

Travel insurance also covers things such as your travel money, replacing lost passports and sorting out lost baggage. You can also get backpacking cover, extreme sports cover and cover in case your holiday is delayed or cancelled for some reason.

Benefits

As you might expect, one of the main benefits of having holiday insurance is that it means if something goes wrong, you’ll be able to sort it out. If you get into difficulty on holiday and don’t have insurance, you might find that you have to deal with the problem on your own – which could be complicated and costly.

Travel insurance helps to make things easier and ensures that you can cover costs that arise from any emergencies that happen while you’re away. You might find you never need to claim on your insurance, but if you do then you’ll certainly be glad you’ve got it.

According to a survey published by Mintel, one in three pets needs an unexpected visit to the vet each year. This means that you are more likely to claim on your pet insurance than on a home & contents policy or even your car insurance.

The word unexpected is important here. If you are looking for pet insurance to provide cover for routine treatments such as vaccinations or worming, forget it policies that do that are as rare as hens’ teeth! And you won’t find cover for elective treatments, such as neutering, either. This means that the most common reasons for visiting the vet are uninsurable.

But don’t forget it’s those unexpected visits that tend to be the expensive ones! Developments in animal care mean that more conditions can be effectively treated and costs of emergency care can be horrendous. A cat that argues with a car could cost 700, even more, to treat. After all, a series of X-rays could cost 400 and a MRI scan will put you back 1,000. If Buster the Bulldog tore a ligament that too can be treated but the cost? Don’t expect change from 1,500! This is serious money!

Having appreciated that most reasons for a visit to the vet are uninsurable, what do we get for our money?

Well, insurance plans largely fall into three types. The first restricts the value of the claim for each condition or event; the second limits the total annual payout and the third and cheapest option, limits the payout per condition and ceases cover after 12 months of treatment. Most will make a payout if you pet dies. And with all policies you will have to pay an excess on any claim, usually between 50 and 100.

And the cost? That depends on which type of policy you want, the excess you want to pay, the sort of pet you have, its breed, its age and even your post-code (vets charge more in Chelsea). But as a guide, an industry estimate suggests costs between 30 and 200 per year for a cat and between 50 to 500 for Buster.

The best advice is start the insurance when your pet is young. Most pets can be insured after they’re 8 weeks old and you can then maintain the insurance over the course of its life. If your pet is in it’s middle age when you want to start the insurance, say eight or nine for a dog, then it may be difficult to get worthwhile cover. This is because treatments for existing health conditions will be excluded from the cover and in any case, a new policy at that age gets expensive.

So how can you lower the premiums? Sometime insurers will give you a discount if you pet has been identity chipped and quantity discounts do prevail! Discounts are widely available for your second and subsequent insured pet.

Then there’s always the Internet. The Internet is taking an increasing share of the insurance market and no wonder its simple, quick and easy. What’s more it’s probably the cheapest avenue for all your insurance whether it be for your home, your car or pet.

Travel Insurance Is It Necessary For A UK-Based Holiday?

Just over a month ago, my boyfriend and I decided to visit the beautiful city of Edinburgh for our 5 year anniversary. We live in Dorset, so we didnt want to spend the whole time travelling. To make the trip easier on ourselves, we decided to fly there, and used a travel agent to organise the week long holiday. Imagine my surprise when I saw an additional 27.50 on the quote for travel insurance! We were only going to Edinburgh, not Pittsburgh!

I was offended that they thought we would be so stupid as to get travel insurance for a trip within the UK. They have hospitals in Edinburgh, and it really isnt very far away. But later on, over a cup of hot chocolate, I put some more thought into it.

Holiday disasters can happen anywhere, not just abroad – so I made a list of what could feasibly go wrong:

One of us could fall ill before we depart, wed have no choice but to cancel the trip. The flights and the hotel were non-refundable, so wed have to pay anyway.

My Grandfather has been ill lately, if he got suddenly worse then I wouldnt be able to go on holiday. Again, the trip would have to be cancelled.

Either of us could be called up for jury service at any time.

Flights are delayed and cancelled all the time. On top of the inconvenience, we may need to arrange an overnight stay near the airport.

Anything could happen to our luggage, airlines lose suitcases all the time.

My boyfriend bought me a wonderful digital camera as a present, if I lost it, it would be very expensive to replace.

Hang on a minute, what about our Home & Contents insurance policy? I bet that would cover us for loss of luggage or my camera as long as I was in the UK. I found the policy and read the small print. No such luck, only personal possessions that were listed on the policy counted, so everything in the luggage wouldnt be covered, and Id need to make a phone call to get the camera included on the policy.

I remembered something else we had over 4 years of no claims discount on our Home & Contents policy. If we had to make a claim, wed lose the no claims discount. Our premiums would go sky high after that, they were already high enough as it is, at 305 a year. I realised that I really should look for a cheaper Home & Contents policy at the time of renewal, and promised myself to do that in future.

After the investigations I had made so far, I realised that 27.50 for a travel policy wasnt actually too bad.

Ive never been one to rest on my laurels though. I might have decided that travel insurance was a good idea, but it didnt mean I was willing to accept the price quoted by the travel agent.

I went online to get some more quotes. The first two or three sites I looked at couldnt give me what I wanted, but 10 minutes later, I struck gold. I found a single trip travel policy for the UK, and it was a good 10 cheaper than the travel agents quote.

I read the small print, no point signing up without knowing all the facts. I was pleased to see all the points I had listed were covered.

Now the exclusions was it all too good to be true after all? Phew no need to worry. If the holiday was less than 25 miles from our home address, or for less than 2 nights, then we wouldnt be covered. No problem there. Otherwise the only downside was that wed have to pay the 30 if we needed to make a claim. Fair enough.

Happy with the policy Id found and with the decision that we did need travel insurance after all, I bought the travel insurance policy there and then.

Recent changes to the UKs quarantine laws mean that it is now possible for you to obtain a pet passport (under the governments passport for pets scheme) and take your family pet away with you on holiday. However, before you run off down to your local travel agent and book tickets for the whole family to that exotic seaside tropical location you have always wanted to visit but have to put off because everyone else at home didnt want to leave Fido in the kennel, you might want to consider getting you and your family some travel insurance including that all important travel pet insurance.

A number of leading pet insurance providers now offer pet owners travel pet insurance to give pet owners the comfort of knowing whether they are far away in exotic places enjoying the sun and sea or closer to home enjoying the cultural delights of Europe, their pet will be insured against any illness or mishap that may unfortunately befall them.

Typically, included in the travel pet insurance is:

- x-rays
- injections
- lab tests
- prescriptions
- costs while they stay at the vet and recuperate

Keep in mind, however, that as with other types of insurance, travel pet insurance usually comes with what is known as an excess. In short, what this means is that you as the owner if the pet will be required to pay a certain amount until a threshold amount is reached. Thereafter you can claim for a reimbursement against the insurance provider. However, unlike humans, travel pet insurance premiums are usually calculated on the type of animal you have and the age of the animal. As such, it is possible to leave arranging the travel pet insurance policy until the last minute, then purchasing this online once you have decided that you will definitely be taking your family pet away with you on your family holidays!

Moreover, as with human travel insurance policies, pet travel insurance can be purchased either as annual policy or as a one-off travel policy. If you get an annual pet travel policy, this means you can take your pet with you whenever you travel one of the 25+ countries outside of the UK which the UK government currently has arrangements for the passport for pets scheme, or any of the European Union countries (which are all part of the passport for pets scheme already). Alternatively, with one-off pet travel insurance policies you need to name the country you are going to visit and the dates youll be there and the policy will only cover you for the duration and place stated.

Many of us take out holiday insurance, but few know really what it is and how it can be defined. If you know what is included, you will be able to make the most of your protection.

In general terms, holiday insurance protects a travellers holiday costs against adverse events such as cancellation and interruption and also reimburses medical expenses, the loss or damage of property and transit delays. Travellers are compensated if they have to cancel or interrupt their travel, they will also be covered should they need emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation and other situations.

The main categories of holiday insurance:

Delays and cancellation including curtailment

Delay: This reimburses travellers for hotel, food or clothing expenses in the event of a flight delay. Some plans also cover costs associated with catching up with a cruise should another delay cause the traveller to miss embarkation.

Cancellation: Reimbursement comes into effect if travellers have booked and paid for a holiday, but are unable to embark because of personal illness or injury, death (of the individual or of a family member), adverse weather conditions, airline strikes, terrorism, bankruptcy, sudden unemployment, jury duty or by sustaining serious damage to their home causing it to be uninhabitable due to fire or flooding.

Interruption: Insurance companies pay money to policy holders abroad if they have to cut short their trip due to illness, death (of the traveller or a family member), weather, airline strikes, terrorism, bankruptcy, becoming unemployed, and other adverse conditions which mean that, due to events outside the control of the holiday-maker, a trip has to be curtailed.

Medical reasons

Medical and health reasons: Reimburses medical and emergency dental costs. Almost all holiday insurance plans work by reimbursing the traveller after they have paid locally for treatment. Claims are usually paid within 7 10 days. Pre-existing conditions are covered by most policies if the policy is purchased within (at the most) 21 days from the date the traveller made the first payment or deposit.

Medical evacuation: This provides emergency transportation to either a local hospital in the event that the traveller is unable to get there by themselves or back to a hospital near the travellers place of residence. If family members are covered on the same policy they can return home also.

Death of traveller

Air Flight accident this covers death or dismemberment during an air flight only. Usually provides the highest amount of coverage due to fairly low likelihood of this occurring.

Common carrier Covers death or dismemberment while travelling on public transport such as a plane, ferry, train bus or taxi.

Accidental death covers death or dismemberment at any time of your trip. Usually provides the lowest amount of coverage due to a higher risk

Loss or damage of personal effects

Baggage loss reimburses travellers for lost, stolen or damaged personal items. This coverage is usually restricted to the duration of the trip and not confined to baggage damaged or lost by the airline. There are two policy limits, total claim and per item maximum. Some policies also place limits on the type of items that can be claimed for such as precious jewellery, laptops and sporting goods

Rental Car damage Reimburses travellers for damage or loss to a rental vehicle. It is designed to allow the traveller to decline collision damage waiver (CDW) coverage offered by the car rental companies. Liability coverage should still be purchased through the car rental company. Rental Car Damage coverage is also often included with the credit card used to pay for the car rental which is often matches the coverage provided in the policy.

Assistance services provides a 24-hour collect telephonel advice and assistance service to travellers. This service can be used anytime a traveller needs advice. Make sure you dont leave home without it.

In conclusion

holiday insurance is the one product in the modern insurance-saturated world that really is essential. You will not regret taking it out, but not being insured for your travel mishaps is a source of huge regret for far too many holiday-makers every year.

Dont leave home without your toothbrush, a sketch pad, a bar of scented soap and a holiday insurance policy!

When you choose to travel, you take the risk of lost luggage, flight cancellations, reservation cancellations, theft and many other situations which may cause anxiety. Planning a vacation is stressful enough without having to worry about something going horribly wrong. Purchasing travel insurance will ensure that you are compensated if anything goes wrong on your trip. When trying to determine whether or not to purchase travel insurance, keep in mind the points listed below which may make your decision much easier.

Many forms of travel insurance will cover you in the following areas:

1.Medical Emergencies Travel insurance will provide you with financial help should you encounter a medical emergency while traveling. If you become ill or are injured while on vacation, your travel insurance will provide you coverage in both situations.

2.Cancellations or Delays If for any reason (beyond your control) your trip is cancelled or delayed your travel insurance will provide you with financial coverage. This includes coverage if your airline goes bankrupt or out of service. Your travel insurance will either compensate you for the money you lost or provide you with new means of transportation.

3.Theft If anything belonging to you is stolen while you are on vacation, your travel insurance will provide you with financial assistance to replace the items which were stolen.

4.Damage or Loss of Personal Property This is likely to happen while on vacation. If your luggage is lost or damaged while on vacation, your travel insurance will definitely cover at least some percentage of the property that is missing. Depending on the insurance plan, it may financially cover all the items that are missing.

5.Lost Passport If you lose your passport or it is stolen while you are on vacation, travel insurance will provide you with the means to get a temporary one. Your travel insurance company will inform you on how to get in contact with your country embassy so that you can arrange to receive a temporary passport.

Depending on the insurance plan you choose, you may be fully or partially covered in the areas listed above. Choose your policy according to what you think the possibility will be that you will require the assistance on your trip.

For many vacationers, travel insurance eliminates any worry that an unforeseen circumstance may arise in which you do not have the money or means to take care of.

Travel insurance helps you relax and enjoy your trip without agonizing over things that may or may not go wrong. Relaxing and enjoying? Isnt that why you planned the vacation in the first place?

As the days grow shorter and summer becomes a memory, many of us will be turning our thoughts towards planning a winter vacation, especially one involving winter sports such as skiing. Travel insurance is an often overlooked part of holiday planning, but if you plan on taking part in sporting activites then it really is essential.

A normal travel insurance policy will probably not be up to the standard you need for winter sports, and if things go wrong you could be left facing a huge bill. So what features should you be looking for in a policy?

- Injury Cover

No matter how accomplished a skiier you are, hurtling down a mountain is always going to be more risky than simply lying on a beach working on a tan. And if you do have an accident, a mountainside isn’t the easiest place for medical services to reach. If you’re unlucky enough to need a mountain rescue or airlift to hospital, you’ll be facing a bill running into the thousands even before you get medical attention. This sort of expense is likely to be specifically excluded on a standard insurance policy, but will be an integral part of almost any winter sports cover.

- Equipment

Most winter sports require expensive equipment, and where there are valuables there’s always the chance of theft. Your insurance should provide enough cover to fully replace your equipment with brand new items if necessary, right there at the resort. Even if you plan to hire your equipment, the hire company will probably require insurance – and your own policy is likely to be cheaper than the standard one they’ll try to sell you.

- Liability

Even the best skiiers or snowboarders can be involved in an accident in which someone else gets injured. Whether or not an accident is your fault, you could end up being taken to court and this is usually a long and expensive process. A decent insurance policy will cover costs from any legal proceedings and / or compensation payments.

- Closure of Piste

If bad weather (or warm weather!) means that the pistes are closed and you can’t ski, your policy should pay you compensation to cover the costs of any pre-booked lessons or lift fees, and many will even include a payment simply to cover the inconvenience of not being able to ski.

- Off Piste

A final point to note is that a standard winter sports policy will probably only cover you for accidents that occur when skiing on designated pistes. If you plan to go off-piste, then make sure your insurance will cover this – you’ll probably have to pay a supplement.

As with most kinds of insurance, paying out for travel insurance can seem like a waste of money. However, if you find yourself caught up in an accident on the mountainside then the costs involved can be truly frightening and you’ll be glad you took the time to arrange adequate cover in advance!

Annual Travel Insurance covers you for every holiday you take for twelve consecutive months. Annual Travel Insurance is generally meant for people who take more than one holiday every year. If you are taking a three-week holiday in some destination during summer and another holiday later in the year, then Annual Travel Insurance could help you save money. Because, if you hold an Annual Travel Insurance, there is no need to spend money for purchasing insurance every time you travel.

Annual Travel Insurance is an insurance policy or contract under which the insurance company agrees to pay for loss or damage or injury encountered by you during your trip. This includes trip cancellation, evacuation, medical emergency, baggage loss etc. If you hold proper Annual Travel Insurance then your worries or anticipations regarding your safety during the trip will be no more.

Annual Travel Insurance policies cover you for one year with an unlimited number of trips. That means, you can have unlimited number of holidays or business trips as you wish and have a guarantee that for all the trips for the next twelve months you will always be covered. During this one year, you can travel as many trips you like, but no trips should exceed the maximum number of days you have selected in your policy. Annual Travel Insurance policy will cover you for a period of one year from the start date you choose. So, one has to be careful in mentioning the start date in the policy. Annual Travel Insurance gives you superior cover levels and reduced excess payments that you need to pay to make your travel insurance claim. Burglary, hijack, hospital expenses, flight delay, travel delay, cancellation, evacuation – everything is covered in a better way if you hold an Annual Travel Insurance. Annual Travel Insurance gives you complete peace of mind all throughout the year and also gives cover to your delayed baggage, loss of personal items or cash, or passport documents.

Obtaining an Annual Travel Insurance policy is very simple. First, select the destinations you wish to be covered for the next consecutive twelve months, and then select the date you want your Annual Travel Insurance to start. After that you have to clear what kind of party you need to cover, that is whether you go for single person, family, couple, group of people etc. and their age groups.

There are many things to consider when purchasing your home insurance, here are a few things to look for when finding the right policy.

Home Owners Liability Coverage

Liability insurance is very important to a homeowner’s coverage because it helps protect the owner and the family from financial disaster if someone files a claim against the homeowner’s policy, sues the homeowner or if the courts hold the homeowner legally responsible for someone else’s injury or property damage. The standard liability limit for most policies is $100,000, but many people believe that additional protection is needed , especially if the homeowner has sizable assets.

For a small increase in premium, an additional $300,000 to $500,000 may be obtained. Liability coverage protects in three ways: Personal liability, damage to the property of others, and medical expenses for injury to others.

Another way to protect one’s assets is to consider an Umbrella Policy which usually adds $1 million (or possibly more) in excess liability coverage to the homeowner’s property and automobile insurance policies. It also covers claims excluded from most basic policies such as libel, slander, defamation and mental anguish.

For example, most policies provide liability coverage that covers not only accidents that occur on the insured property but accidents that occur elsewhere. If the family dog bites a neighbor in front of another neighbor’s house, for example, the dog owner’s homeowner’s policy will usually compensate the neighbor for injuries and necessary medical expenses. For more information on home owners insurance visit our specialist site below.

Theft Off Premises

Most policies automatically insure against the loss of personal property even if that property is not on the insured premises when it is lost. If one goes to the airport with several suitcases and they are stolen, this is probably covered. Talk with your agent and/or your insurance company for details.

Additional Living Expenses

Another automatic benefit of which many homeowners are unaware is coverage for living expenses if the covered premises is damaged to the point of being uninhabitable. Not only should the policy pay for the cost to repair the damage to the dwelling, but it should also reimburse the homeowner for the additional expenses of living elsewhere while the repairs are being made.

What Can A Homeowner Do To Be Prepared?

How does someone find out what is and what is not covered? Read the policy carefully. It’s not likely to be fun reading, but the good news is that if one reads and understands his or her policy before it is needed, this knowledge may save unexpected financial losses should a problem occur. It is always best to talk with one’s insurance agent or the company that issued the policy for details.

Understanding your home owners insurance policy is best handled before a claim is made. In the case of the contents, an inventory of items room by room is important to have with information such as the date purchased, serial number, the original cost of each item and a brief description. Video tape or still photos is very helpful along with the inventory. These items should be stored in a safe place such as a safety deposit box in a bank or savings and loan institution and not in the home because if the home is destroyed, the chances are the inventory and related photos or tape may also be destroyed.

Travel insurance protects holiday expenses against adverse events such as cancellation and interruption and also reimburses medical expenses, the loss or damage of property and transit delays.

Many millions of travellers and holiday makers purchase some form of insurance every year, but few people know really what it is and how it can be defined. If you know what is included, and what is not you will be able to make the most of your protection, and get reimbursed fairly.

There are four main categories of travel insurance:

1.Health and Medical reasons

Emergency evacuation: This garuantees emergency transportation to either a local hospital in the event that the traveller is unable to get there by themselves or back to a hospital near the travellers home town. If family members are covered on the same policy they can travel back home also.

Medical reasons: This reimburses emergency medical and dental costs. Nearly all holiday insurance plans work by reimbursing the traveller after they have paid locally for treatment. Claims are usually paid within 7 10 working days. Pre-existing medical conditions are covered by most policies if the policy is purchased within (at the most) 21 days from the date the traveller made the first payment or deposit.

2.Delays and cancellation or curtailment

Cancellation: Re-imbursement comes into effect if travellers have booked and paid for a holiday, but are unable to embark because of personal illness or injury, death (of the individual or of a family member), adverse weather conditions, transport strikes, terrorism, bankruptcy, sudden unemployment, jury duty or by sustaining serious damage to their home causing it to be uninhabitable due to fire or flooding.

Delay: This reimburses travellers for hotel, food or clothing expenses in the event of a flight delay. Some plans also cover costs associated with catching up with a cruise should another delay cause the traveller to miss embarkation.
Interruption: Insurance companies pay money to policy holders abroad if they have to cut short their trip due to illness, death (of the traveller or a family member), terrorism, weather, airline strikes, bankruptcy, sudden unemployment, and other adverse conditions which mean that, due to events outside the control of the holiday-maker, a trip has to be curtailed.

3.Death:

Accidental death covers death or dismemberment at any time of your trip. Usually garuantees the lowest amount of coverage due to a higher risk
Air Flight accident this covers death or dismemberment during an air flight only. Usually garuantees the highest amount of coverage due to fairly low likelihood of this occurring.

Common carrier Covers death or dismemberment while travelling on public transport such as a plane, ferry, train bus or taxi.

4.Loss or damage of property:

Baggage loss reimburses travellers for lost, stolen or damaged personal items. This coverage is usually restricted to the duration of the trip and not confined to baggage damaged or lost by the airline. There are two policy limits, total claim and per item maximum. Some policies also place limits on the type of items that can be claimed for such as precious jewellery, laptops and sporting goods

Hire Car damage This reimburses travellers for damage or loss to a rental vehicle.

Assistance services garuantees a 24-hour collect telephone advice and assistance service to travellers. This service can be used anytime a traveller needs advice. Make sure you keep a copy of this number in several places in your luggage or on your person when you move around.
