My father died when I was nine. He left behind my mother and four children aged between seventeen years and nine and no money. Sure I missed him but at nine I didn’t really have much idea about death or loss. I know it sounds selfish but what I really missed was our old lifestyle. We had to move house because we lived in a company house and couldn’t stay there anymore. We had to give up our car because that was provided by the company too. All we could afford was a run down council house. It was small and cramped and didn’t have much in the way of fences so we felt we had neighbours right on top of us. This was all salt to the wound of our grief, all these niggly things that had now become our life. I don’t know why my father didn’t take out life insurance, all I know is that he didn’t and we bore the consequences of that decision for a long time.

It has made me wonder why so many people roll their eyes when the words ‘life insurance’ are uttered out loud. Sure I can understand not wanting to contemplate a scenario that would require you or your family to actually need it but that is no excuse for ignoring it altogether and not planning ahead. Imagine, just for a moment, your familys life if the worst was to happen and you didnt have life insurance?

The purpose of life insurance is to guarantee an income to your spouse and children if you were no longer able to contribute to their welfare like you do now. Think about it, if something were to happen to you, could your family afford to live in your current home? Would there be enough money to maintain their current lifestyle? Would the cost of a funeral become a burden? Would your spouse be able to support your family easily? Or would the stress and grief and financial burden of loosing you cause unendurable hardship for them?

Maybe you think that because you have saved and invested wisely and setup a solid foundation that despite missing you, your family would be OK financially. The reality is that it is unlikely. This is particularly true for families with young children. This is often a time where families are still struggling to become established and often debts are high, savings low, caring for children is costly and income may not be at its peak or perhaps one partner is out of the workforce to care for the children. Of course, it is this time when funds are often stretched that life insurance is most needed but often that very fact puts families off from the regular commitment of insurance premiums.

But the good news is that it makes you a good candidate for term life insurance because it is the most inexpensive form of life insurance around. The premiums for term life insurance are worked out based on your age and health and is usually purchased in terms of a specific number of years 1, 5, 10, 20 or whatever period you would prefer. The upshot is that term life insurance has the highest coverage for the lowest premiums.

While term insurance is not ideal for older individuals as prices go up substantially with age, it is the a great solution for younger couples or families who have high debts including mortgages, life expenses and dependants. The insurance can cover you while your children grow and the mortgage is paid off. By the time the policy expires you will more than likely have invested, paid off your major debts and no longer have dependants.

So Who Needs to be Covered with a Life Insurance Policy? Given that insurance is really about income protection providing funds when you can’t you would normally cover whoever is contributing to the family finances. So first up, make sure the primary income earner is covered. If this income disappeared then you want to make sure the ongoing family needs are covered.

But don’t stop there. If your spouse looks after the children full-time and something were to happen to them, how would you fund childcare? Insurance could cover that additional cost. So if any secondary income is relied on to cover expenses either through income or an unpaid contribution then that person should also have an insurance policy.

Do you need to get life insurance for your children? Generally, this is only advised if you can’t afford funeral expenses (generally about $5000). Otherwise, there is no reason for children to be insured as they do not contribute to the family income.

Having life insurance not only gives you peace of mind knowing your family will be taken care of after you or your spouse has gone, it may well be one of the best financial decisions your family could make.

Many people think the best way to get health insurance coverage is simply to get the most complete coverage one can afford. This is, to some extent true, and if you have a lot of liquid resources it is a good idea to get a comprehensive individual health insurance plan that includes everything from a small deductible for hospital visits to full dental and vision coverage. However, if you are on a very tight budget, you may want to consider getting a smaller plan than you can afford and paying for some of your medical expenses out of pocket.

If you are juggling several different prescriptions that are costly to fill and refill, or that require frequent check ups with your doctor to make sure that you have the right dosage, it is important to get a full health plan. However, if you are looking for ways to economize on your health costs, it may make sense not to get such a comprehensive plan. If you dont have any dependents and dont need to make regular hospital visits for any reason, consider whether you really need a full health insurance plan that gives you complete coverage. Paying more than you need for health insurance can be a heavy financial burden, so it is worth thinking creatively and realistically about what you really need and if it is possible to get the care you require without shelling out a large monthly payment to a health insurance provider.

Many people find that through a combination of free clinics and minimal health insurance coverage, they are able to get by spending much less money than they would pay for comprehensive health insurance. It is still a smart idea to have coverage that will help alleviate the financial burden if you suddenly develop a condition or meet with an injury that requires emergency care. However, it is a good idea to look into what kinds of plans are available, as one of the many plans designed specifically to give you emergency coverage may be a much better choice than a plan that will leave you generally well insured.

It is never a good idea to gamble with your health care, so make sure that you if dont opt for the maximum amount of insurance that you can afford, that you have a plan for how to meet any medical expenses that may arise. Think about other ways that you can designate money for your health care needs, such as starting a savings account where you store away the money you would be paying for insurance every month. This will help you make sure that you are prepared for anything. Dont forgo coverage entirely though. At the very least purchase a high deductible plan that will cover you in the case of a serious illness or injury. Otherwise one serious illness or injury could wipe you out financially.

Why Buy Life Insurance?
Life insurance is generally offered as part of a benefits package with employment. For the most part, however, these policies are rather small, usually in the ten thousand dollar range. People buy life insurance policies so that their families will not have to bear financial burden when a loved one passes on.

There is another reason to buy life insurance, however, and it is the life insurance settlement. Your life insurance policy can be settled for a large sum before the end of your lifetime, though many people are not aware of this. Others buy life insurance specifically with this reasoning in mind.

Purchasing a Life Insurance Policy
Though it may sound strange, its actually a good idea to buy life insurance while the policyholder is still in good health. Rates are usually cheaper when this is the case, which makes buying a life insurance policy a whole lot easier. Also, rates are less expensive if you buy life insurance while still young. If youre young and in good health, its actually the best time of your life to purchase a life insurance policy as strange as that may sound.

Dont be afraid to do your own shopping around to find the best rates, and the best life insurance settlement. Comparison shopping is the way to make sure you get the best life insurance policy, and life insurance settlement, possible. Dont rely on your employer to give you all the life insurance coverage you need. Generally, life insurance policies and life insurance settlements offered as part of a benefits package will not have good payoffs.

The Life Insurance Settlement
There are many reasons that you may want to settle your life insurance policy. Sometimes, a life insurance settlement is the best thing you can do for your family. For instance, when the policyholder has reached the age of seventy and there is a need for a new life insurance policy or long-term care, your best option may be a life insurance settlement. A change in health status, estate tax charge, or when the policy has outlived the beneficiaries may all be reasons to consider a life insurance settlement, as well.

A large factor in the life insurance settlement is the need for liquidation of assets. This may be due to bankruptcy or other financial reasons, or simply that the policy holder would like to acquire the sum of the life insurance settlement early. Your reasons for settling your life insurance policy are your own, and if you feel the need for a settlement then you should pursue one.

Be sure to discuss your life insurance settlement options with your insurance company. If needed, have a new life insurance policy in place before going forward with your life insurance settlement. There is no reason you cannot have two or more life insurance policies at the same time.

A life insurance settlement can allow you to enjoy some of the benefits of your life insurance policy, and be a good source of income when long-term care or extra income is needed. Be sure to discuss the exact amount that you will receive from your life insurance settlement with your insurance company, and find out the payment scale and time frame for receiving your settlement. When you agree on a life insurance settlement, the paperwork that you sign should include all of this information. Be sure to look over any paperwork very carefully before signing, because you can never be too careful with insurance companies.

Deciding on the wrong life insurance plan might leave a family without financial resources at the worst possible time.

Choosing between term and universal life insurance plans can be confusing. Only with some research and planning can a responsible choice be made.

Do You Even Need Life Insurance?

Before deciding between term and universal coverage, consumers need to determine whether or not life insurance is actually needed.

When you come right down to it, it’s a matter of money — if death would cause a financial burden for the family, then life insurance is critical. Financial matters to be considered include funeral costs, college tuition, and all outstanding and upcoming debts. For single people without children or dependents, life insurance is really optional.

Once you’ve made the decision to buy life insurance, then it’s time to determine which kind of policy is right. This is when you need a reputable insurance agent, referred to you by someone you trust. The agent can help you deal with the details of the various benefits and costs of multiple policy types.

Term Life

Term life insurance policies are among the most flexible and economical types of life insurance coverage available. These policies are designed for those who want basic coverage for a set time period without a savings account built in. This means that there will be no return on the money paid into the policy over the years.

Premium rates for a term life policy vary with the policy. Policies are usually purchased for 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30-year periods, and they may be renewable. Apart from low rates, the variety of term periods is one of the most appealing features.

For instance, a couple with a child entering college who want to ensure that tuition will be paid for in the event of their death, can purchase a term life policy for just those years. There is no reason to purchase a lifetime policy for a short-term need. Term policies with increasing or decreasing coverage are also available.

A disadvantage of term life policies is the inconsistency of their rates. While premium rates start out very low, they usually rise as policyholders age. Also, policyholders who want to renew after the initial term has ended, may find the renewal fees prohibitive.

Universal Life Insurance

Universal life insurance policies will pay any necessary death benefits, but also provide policyholders with an additional tax-deferred savings account advantage. Generally these policies must be held for a minimum of 15 years before resulting in any return from the savings account. They provide policyholders with a stable long-term investment that can be borrowed against or cashed out.

The premium rates and coverage provided by universal life policies remain constant throughout the years. Premium rates tend to be higher than with other policies, largely due to agent commissions, but under some plans the rates drop as the policyholder ages and may even disappear altogether. Unless the policy lapses, there are no renewal fees to contend with.

While some financial experts argue that there are better investment options available for educated consumers, many recognize universal life policies as having sound investment benefits.

What is Long Term Care Insurance?
Long term care insurance serves to help those individuals who need extra care and attention as they age. Long term care insurance helps to take financial burden away from family members, and for the individual in need of such care. Often, the elderly have very little income and no extra money. Yet, the cost of aging itself seems to be rising. Those who can least afford it are expected to pay huge healthcare costs.

This is why long term care insurance can be beneficial, and take financial burden away from those who cannot afford the high cost of healthcare. A long term care insurance policy may be purchased at any time, though policies are ideally purchased before the need for long term care arises.

Paying the Price of Long Term Care Insurance
Long term care insurance premiums and rates will usually go up as the policyholder ages. In some cases, long term care insurance will not be needed at all. In those cases where long term care is needed, however, long term care insurance can be invaluable.

The price of paying for long term care insurance is much less than the cost of paying for long term care. Healthcare these days is very expensive. Long term care, these days, is astronomical.

An average private nursing home room this year costs over $190 per day. Now, to receive 24 hour care at home costs more than $400 per day. Life expectancy for women is 80 years, five more than men. You want to stay in your home as long as you can. You want to choose where and how you receive long term care as you grow older. About sixty percent of those age 65 and older will need long term care. A third of those receiving long term care today are under 65
-Long Term Care web site, July 2006

Obtaining a Long Term Care Insurance Policy
Many insurance companies offer long term care insurance policies. It is always a good idea to shop around for the best rates and coverage when it comes to purchasing any type of insurance policy, but especially when it comes to health insurance.

Rates on long term care insurance will rise as time passes, but in general it is best to purchase a long term care insurance policy before the need for long term care arises. Do as much research and obtain as many quotes as possible when considering a long term care insurance policy. Make sure you know the rate at which the policy will increase and how much the long term care insurance will pay.

Understanding Your Long Term Care Insurance Policy
These days, simple insurance policies are so complicated that you almost need a translator to decipher the more complex language. Its very important that you understand the details of your long term care policy, including limits and deductibles that are applied to that policy. If you need help understanding a policy, you can consult with a lawyer. Do not sign up for a policy unless you understand every detail of that long term care insurance policy. You want to have all the details before you sign.

How Do You Know Long Term Care Insurance is Right For You?
Long term care insurance is for anyone who does not have an unlimited supply of money, who does not want themselves or their family to bear a heavy financial burden as they age. Long term care insurance serves to protect you, both financially and health-wise. Long term care insurance is a good idea for anyone, whether they believe they may need long term care or not.

If you’ve found your way here, you’ve no doubt decided you need to purchase a new insurance policy or add to your existing level of insurance. It can be a little confusing deciding just what you need. So let’s cover some of the most popular types of insurance.

Critical Illness Insurance

Heart disease, stroke and cancer are just a few of the critical illness that bring a chill to your spine when you are diagnosed. The good news is that with the advances with modern medicine many illness that even recently were almost always fatal can now be treated and life goes on as normal. However, in a worst-case scenario, critical illness insurance helps you cope with the expense of your illness while you are treated and helps your loved ones to go on unencumbered by the financial burden left by a long illness should you lose the battle.

Disability Insurance

One of the most popular forms of supplemental insurance, Disability Insurance pays you a percentage of your income as a benefit should you become disabled. You use these benefits to help with out of pocket expenses not covered by your major medical policy and to pay your household bills while you recover from a temporary disability or a lump sum payment or a life long benefit in the case of a permanent disability.

When shopping for a Life Insurance quote, Term Life Insurance and Whole Life Insurance are the two most popular choices. Let’s explain each of these:

Whole Life Insurance

When shopping for a Whole Life Insurance quote you will find that, the policy remains in force during your entire lifetime as long as the premiums are paid. The type of life insurance also builds what is commonly called a cash value that you borrow under certain circumstance after a period of time.

Term Life Insurance

When shopping for a Term Life Insurance quote keep in mind that this insurance will cover you for a specified time only such as five years. Your premiums do not increase during the term of your policy but will likely increase once it is time to renew the term. Term Life Insurance does not build a cash value.

Term life is generally cheaper if you are younger in age and a good starting point for a safety net for a young family until you’re ready to invest in long-term whole life insurance.

Now you’re fully informed to make the right choices as to just what new or additional insurance to choose for yourself and your family.

Perhaps the most commonly purchased type of insurance is automobile insurance, also called drivers insurance or car insurance. Although laws vary somewhat, virtually all states today require drivers to carry some sort of automobile insurance to legally operate a vehicle on public roads. The penalties for driving without insurance can range from fines to a suspended license or, in the case of repeated infractions, possibly even a short jail sentence. Given that drivers insurance is required in pretty much every state, its worth having some basic knowledge about the subject.

Types and levels of Coverage

The type of insurance coverage a person needs, and how much they will pay for that coverage, vary depending on a number of factors, such as the age of the driver, his or her driving record, the age and value of the vehicle, the dollar amount of the coverage, and whether the vehicle is fully paid for. While auto insurance can get pretty complex, there are four types that everyone should be aware of.

Liability coverage is the most basic type of coverage; it protects the driver against any claims that might be brought after an accident or other incident that is the drivers fault. This is usually the minimum coverage that a driver needs to be considered insured. Liability insurance usually has the lowest premiums, but it doesnt cover any damage to the drivers own vehicle; thus a lower monthly premium needs to be balanced against the risk of a potentially large financial burden. Also, most loan lenders require a driver to carry comprehensive coverage until the borrower has paid off the loan in full.

Collision insurance covers part or all of the cost of repairs to the drivers vehicle in the event of a collision, based on an estimate of the project cost for the repairs. While collision insurance can definitely pay for itself in the even of a car crash, the monthly premiums are higher than simple liability. Most policies are also subject to a deductible, which means that the policy carrier is responsible for paying a set amount before the insurance company pays. Deductibles vary widely; generally speaking, though, the higher the deductible, the lower the monthly payments, and the lower the deductible, the higher the monthly payments will be.
?
Comprehensive coverage is typically required for vehicles that are still in the process of being paid for. Many vehicle owners also carry comprehensive coverage for expensive or otherwise valuable vehicles. Comprehensive coverage covers damage that isnt the result of a collision fire, theft, vandalism, and so on although the exact items covered can vary quite a bit from one policy to the next.

Uninsured Coverage protects you if an uninsured or underinsured driver hits you or your vehicle. Although insurance is a legal requirement in most places, that doesnt mean that everyone on the road is insured. This type of coverage means that you wont get stuck with the repair bill if someone less responsible than you involves you in an accident.

Each type of insurance is available at several different levels of coverage; the higher the coverage (in dollars), the higher the premium will be. Premiums will also increase if the driver is involved in an accident or receives tickets for traffic infractions. Additionally, premiums are higher for males than for females, for younger drivers, and for drivers in urban or higher-crime areas. Despite this, however, automobile insurance is a necessity for any responsible driver.

Term life insurance is basically a no frills type of life insurance. It is a life insurance for a specified duration limit, or time. You buy a specific amount of coverage for a specific time period by signing a contract. You pay for that coverage period and at the end of the term the policy expires. For example, the term might be until retirement, or until children are grown, or until college is paid for.

Term life insurance is the least expensive available insurance policy and allows you to spend a lot less and use the extra money in a better investment. It does not build up cash value and the premium normally increases as the policy owner gets older. Usually term life insurance covers
a specific term such as term of 1year, term of 20 years or term of 30 years.

If you die while the policy is active, term life insurance provides a stated benefit for it; and your survivors will be paid the agreed upon amount. However, the policy does not provide any returns beyond the stated benefit and once the policy expires, the insurance coverage ceases and the insurance company keeps the money. Some term insurance policies give you the right to renew at the same rate for multiple years, while others do not. The former are generally a bit more expensive.

Term life insurance is most suitable for you, if you are:

in need of coverage for a limited period of time,
young and looking for lower premiums,
buying a home or car, where the financial burden of a loan will disappear in time.

Term life insurance policies must be renewed when each term ends. Before buying a term life insurance policy, you should ask about the renewal provisions for the protection of your future insurability. There are some typical choices:

Annual Renewable—–the premium go up each year.
Level Term—–the premium stays the same for specific period like 5, 10, 15, or 20 years, then increases sharply.
Automatic Renewable—–you’ll have to pay more for this feature.

Some other options on term life insurance policies may include:
Re-Entry – it requires a lower premium than an automatically renewable policy. You can renew at the same low rate offers to new customer; but you’ll have to pass a physical examination. If you’ve developed any health problems, your premium could go up and cost more than an
automatic-renewable policy.
Convertable term – youll have the option to convert to a whole life insurance policy in later years.
